Affordable Vanpooling in our Region
Virginia’s vanpool program is built on a successful public-private partnership. GWRideConnect and other commuter assistance programs help connect riders with available vanpools and support rider recruitment, while the vanpools themselves are independently owned and operated by private providers.
Because each vanpool is managed independently, fares are established by the vanpool operator based on the costs of operating that specific route. Operators work hard to keep fares as affordable as possible and within the limits of available transit benefits. However, factors such as length of route, fuel prices, maintenance costs, tolls, and ridership levels all affect the cost of operating a vanpool and may result in participants contributing a portion of the fare that is above the transit benefit.
Vanpooling continues to be one of the most cost-effective and convenient commuting options available, helping riders save on vehicle expenses while reducing traffic congestion and supporting a more sustainable transportation network.
